What is Content Syndication?

June 10th, 2010

Most people know what syndication means. We’ve all seen TV shows, listened to radio programs or read columns that are syndicated across several publishers. On the web, there are exponentially more media properties to distribute your content to, making the idea of syndication much more accessible, and much more of a possibility in spreading your message.

Content syndication on the web is defined as the mass publication of a single article, podcast or video (content assets) across many outlets. In a nutshell: Write once, spread everywhere.

.com names ripe for an upheaval?

June 1st, 2010

On the way home from work tonight, I heard a particularly interesting clip on Marketplace. The organization in charge of managing domain names is thinking about revolutionizing the way we access websites by creating numerous new top level domain names (i.e. .com, .net, .info, etc).

Not just a few new names like the standard annual introduction that ushered in .info, .biz and the top country extensions (.uk), but this proposal would allow anyone (who can supply a $55,000 application fee) to create their own unique extension. Can you see sites like support.apple, store.apple and corporate.apple? What about entreprenuers and organizations who might try to create new standards like .band for musicians, .store for retailers or even .porn for, well…

A Juicy SEO example

May 18th, 2010

Search engine optimization is a big part of what we help our clients with and I know there is a lot of skepticism surrounding internet marketing firms and the use of their own tactics. In light of this, I thought it would be helpful and interesting to share a recent success we enjoyed using a very common tactic we use to leverage articles to gain long tail search terms. What is link building?

May 18th, 2010

Link building is the exercise of accumulating links to your web pages from other relevant sites.

Links to your web pages hold an obvious value: they bring new people to your website. That reason alone makes a case for building as many links to your web pages from relevant and high trafficked websites as possible. More links mean more people can find your site.

Don’t forget to help your visitors become customers

May 13th, 2010

We review a lot of websites. In fact, the majority of our new clients start with some kind of website review. There are several common problems we run into, but there is one problem we run into nearly 100% of the time, and it has a serious impact on performance.

What is this systemic and pervasive problem? No clear call to action.

Let me elaborate. You do so much work to get the attention of your visitors and bring them to your site. Once there, you plead your case with compelling, benefit-focused content. But then you let them flounder. Read the rest of this entry »

Foursquare tells you who is visiting your business

May 9th, 2010

iphone with fourquare appI’ve been using Foursquare for a number of months and introducing it during our marketing seminars to small businesses. It’s a location-based social network that runs on your mobile phone and allows you to tell your friends where you’re at, and meet up with others at the same place. It’s also a great way to discover new places around you while traveling or exploring.

This ability to discover new places and spread the word about your favorite places makes Foursquare a natural marketing and promotion tool for food and entertainment venues that thrive on foot traffic.

What is a content asset?

May 6th, 2010

Content assets are the cornerstone of content marketing on the web, and we use this term quite a bit. Recently I came to realize how much I was explaining what this term meant in meetings, so I thought I would create a quick post about.

A content asset is really just some piece of content that you can use as a business tool, either by monetizing it directly (purchasable book) or using it to attract new customers (free article). Often, this content asset is repackaged and distributed in numerous formats and mediums. Think about how a movie is first released on the big screen, broken down into small parts for trailers and web previews, then taken to DVD, then presented on TV. Each time the asset is used, it’s just a variation of the original working in some other way.

The Flash vs HTML Debate Explained by Apple’s Steve Jobs

April 29th, 2010

Over the years, we’ve created some pretty hot flash sites. Heck, just last year, we redesigned and relaunched a beautiful portfolio site for our pals at LuckeYou — an awesome broadcast and animation production studio in New York. While flash sites can work well for creative firms to show off their creativity, they aren’t the best route for small businesses who are trying to expand their reach and visibility online. More and more, we are standing firm on our belief that a site that is fully enclosed in Flash is not a smart solution in the long term. Thankfully, we now have a terrific rant from Steve Jobs himself, a plain-speak explanation as to why Apple has avoided integrating flash into their devices. And hey, why wouldn’t you want to apply the same strategic thinking that one of the world’s most successful brands employs? Read the rest of this entry »
